This was a really weird wine ... as I have mentioned in previous reviews I have recently put my cellar on CellarTracker and have been trying out some of the features. Today I thought it would be fun to see what kind of Chianti I have in my cellar ... sadly the program said I only have 3 bottles (this I am having trouble believing because I know I have more kicking around in there) - and the oldest was this bottle from 2000. Took me awhile to locate it because the label is one of those weird-fanggled-looks-like-we-made-it-at-home-with-our-new-printer kinda labels: lots of odd colours like orange and red, not what I think about when you hear the word Chianti. I also have to admit that I decided, in keeping with the old school nature of this wine, forewent the usual red wine glass I use and pulled out an small juice glass - like the ones you see Italians drinking wine from in movies (funny aside - as my wife was making fun of me for my glassware of choice, we happened upon an old movie on TV and what was the guy drinking wine from ... vindication). In this glass the wine showed that it still had some really good acidity along with dried fruit, some dried leaves notes - kinda like orange pekoe tea - the acidity helped to give the fruit a lift, and in the bottom of the glass a fine sediment appeared. This was quite a nice wine for a 12 year old Sangiovese ... the more I try old Italian wines the more impressed I am with them.
Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Rocca della Macie 2005 Chianti Riserva (Italy)
Dinner chez mom and pop; and mom requested something Italian be brought along. Dad prepared something really simple, very unlike him because he likes to cook and try out new things, especially with an audience. So imagine my surprise when dad pulled off the stove a pot of Italian Herbed Hamburger Helper. "I've never tried the stuff before and I've been seeing the commercial all week," he says in his own defense. Before dinner mom and I popped the cork on this bottle. It started off cedary with tannins and a minimal amount of black fruit on the nose and palate. As it continued to sit in the glass it opened and became quite the exquisite bottle of wine, spice, cassis, and pencil shavings, making it still a fairly woody wine but the mid-palate started to fill out with lovely black fruit while the finish continued it's woody ways with a long cedary finish. And amazingly it went with the Hamburger Helper - must have been the mix of the two Italian themed ingredients.

Mondavi/Frescobaldi 2002 Danzante Sangiovese (Italy)
Boo Hiss Hiss Boo ... nothing's worse than opening a bottle that you have been sitting on for awhile and finding out it is corked (that moldy cardboard, wet newspaper, damp basement smell - nasty). This one was subtle, as in I thought it was there, then I thought it was gone, then I thought it was again - then I realized it definitely was there: countless sniffs and three sips later. Few things make me sadder than knowing that this bottle was bad the moment I took it off the shelf and no amount of care in storing it could have helped. Damn! I guess it is on to something else.
